"An uncommonly engaging young narrator kicks this debut fantasy ahead of the general run." Magic, wizards, hocus pocus, black cats and flying broomsticks resonate with the imagination of young readers--just ask J K Rowling. The difficulty is finding a new approach to the old premise. Author Sarah Prineas is valiant in her attempt to broaden the plotlines and enhance character development in her tale of sorcery and witchcraft. Conn is a pickpocket that inadvertently touches a stone that is not a stone at all, but the locus magicalicus belonging to the wizard Nevery. When Conn doesn't die from the touch, Nevery takes him on as an apprentice, on the proviso that Conn finds a stone of his own. But things aren't that simple and Conn finds himself thrust into a world of intrigue as he sets out to find out who is stealing the city of Wellmet's magic. By writing the tale in first person, Prineas latches onto the young readers' imagination, placing them at the heart of all the action. Delicate illustrations pepper the text and a roundup of important people and places at the books conclusion serves as a helpful reminder. The first in a trilogy, I daresay that there will be a line of 12 year-olds waiting for the next instalment. Fiona Edwards is an editor, journalist and teacher
