About the Author

Rebecca Anderson was born in Uganda, raised in Ontario, went to school in New Jersey, and has spent much of her life dreaming of other worlds entirely. As a child she immersed herself in fairy tales, mythology, and the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and E. Nesbit; later she discovered more contemporary authors like Ursula LeGuin, Patricia A. McKillip and Robin McKinley, and learned to take as much pleasure from their language as the stories they told. Now married and the mother of three young sons, Rebecca reads to her children the classic works of fantasy and science fiction that enlivened her own childhood, and tries to bring a similar sense of humor, adventure, and timeless wonder to the novels she writes for children and young adults.

Faeries have always existed in the Oak; it has been their home for hundreds of years, long before the humans and their house. But there are no longer as many faeries as there once were. They are fading, dying. Their magic is all but gone, and no one can say why.

There are a few simple rules all faeries must live by, obey the Queen, never go outside, and above all else stay away from humans. These rules are made to protect the Oak and its faery inhabitants. But what if it is these rules that are slowly killing the faeries?

No faery would dare to disobey the Queen, but when one faery has the chance to leave the Oak, to discover the truth of the faeries past; will she be able to save her kind, finding a way to restore the faeries magic? Or will she bring the destruction of the faery world down upon them all in her quest for the truth, and be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice?

I have been looking forward to reading this book for a while, and at first I feared it would never live up to the expectations I had built up. But lucky for me it was everything I expected it to be and more.

Knife is a story of adventure, danger, secrets, love and faeries; a magical world to lose yourself in. This is the kind of book you can read again and again, with something in it for everyone. It is surprisingly touching and more involving then first appears. The first in a series, this book is a must read.

Judge a book by its cover? No, but the literally shiny cover of "Knife", illustrated by Brian Froud, perfectly conveys a take-no-prisoners kick-ass Faery, the eponymous "Knife" of the title.

There is no fairy-dust in our heroine's life; in a world where Faeries have lost their magic, living at the bottom of the garden means foraging for food, living in fear, hiding from predators such as crows, foxes, owls... and humans. But our heroine doesn't want to accept her lot, she doesn't want to live in fear. But what can she do?

Why do I like this story? Let me count the ways...
The plot isn't simple; there are secrets and mysteries, and their solution is not straightforward. The characters are not simple either; there is more than one person in Knife's life who is more than what they seem. The world-building is very satisfying; the Faeries here are woven from different threads of classic tradition in a way that enhances the whole, and adds something new.

It is definitely worth reading more than once.
