PreS-K-- In both words and pictures, these books introduce animal parents as they care for their young. A simple analogy is set up between a human child's narration of how he or she is nurtured, and the corresponding behavior among sheep, chickens, pigs, etc., is shown in soft, realistic, full-color illustrations. Sturdy stock pages make these books an excellent choice for sharing; labels above each picture identify the creatures depicted. Roger B. Hirschland's How Animals Care for Their Babies (National Geographic, 1987) is a more scientific presentation of this subject, but for a slightly older audience. --Barbara B.
