Tanya Huff may have left Nova Scotia at three, and has lived most of her life since in Ontario, but she still considers herself a Maritimer. On the way to the idyllic rural existence she shares with her partner Fiona Patton, six cats, and a chihuahua, she acquired a degree in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic--an education she was happy to finally use while writing her recent Smoke novels. Of her previous twenty-three books, the five--Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact, Blood Debt--featuring Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII, romance writer, and vampire are among the most popular. Tanya can be found via Twitter at @TanyaHuff.
Newly returned to active duty with a promotion, Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr has the job of accompanying a batch of marine recruits on a training mission that takes them to Crucible, a planet able to be programmed for a variety of training scenarios. When marines start dying, Kerr and her fellow officers discover that someone has altered the programs and that the opponents they are facing are real-and deadly. The third installment in Huff's Confederation series (Valor's Choice; The Better Part of Valor) adds a new dimension to her military sf adventure series as Kerr begins to question the basis of the Confederation and its division into Elder and Younger Races as well as the true reasons behind the Elder Races' war against the alien "bugs." Series fans will enjoy this fast-paced adventure, appealing to the same audience as David Weber's Honor Harrington series. A good choice for most sf collections. The fast-paced third military SF novel in Huff's Confederation series (after Valor's Choice and The Better Part of Valor) examines how an interplanetary confederation might unite several distinctive species into an effective military organization despite widely differing physiologies, customs and mores. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Torin Kerr, recovering from injuries suffered in a first contact situation, accompanies a recruit platoon into the Crucible, a training planet where they apply their lessons in a realistic live-fire exercise against robotic drones. While the exercise is underway, the drones begin acting aggressively, without regard to fail-safes or their programming. Has the platoon come under attack by the mysterious Others, or is this related to the alien escape pod that everybody has forgotten exists except for Torin, her lover and an obnoxious reporter? The intriguing and well-designed aliens and intricate plotting keep the reader guessing. (June) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
