Nathan Large has translated eight of the Findus and Pettson books from Swedish to English, and now lives in Sweden with his family.
Sven Nordqvist (b, 1946) is a well-loved Swedish children's author and illustrator. The Findus and Pettson stories draw on his playful adventures with his two young sons, and his unique illustrations are inspired by a delight in everyday life. Sven Nordqvist sets out intentionally to create a safe world in his Pettson and Findus series; a world in which problems can find resolution. Such a world, he believes, provides the security that children need in today's world: "The world should be comprehensible. Essentially that's how I myself would like it to be."
This is the latest in the characterful series about Findus the cat and Farmer Pettson. In this story a rooster comes to live with the chickens. Findus feels very put out that the chickens no longer want to play with him, and especially that the rooster makes a lot of noise! Findus and Pettson try various strategies to resolve this, but in the end the rooster leaves, making the chickens very sad, although they are all cheered up at the prospect of expecting chicks! The usual fun and chaos with Findus and Pettson. -- Saffia Farr * Juno Magazine, Summer 2017 *
