Johanna Skilling is a senior executive at a major advertising agency in New York. Motivated by her frustration with the inconsistent treatment recommendations she received after being diagnosed with fibroids, she took a year-long break from her career to research and write this book.
Fibroids are relatively common, generally benign muscular tumors that grow on a woman's uterus. They are problematic not because they are cancerous but because they cause pain, pressure, infertility, and bleeding. Skilling, who suffers with fibroids herself, has written a comprehensive guide that defines the condition, its symptoms, and the myriad possible treatments. She includes chapters on diet, sex, pregnancy, and emotional issues. Her first- and second-person comments may turn some readers off but work well as a device that engenders sisterhood and connectivity. Skilling liberally sprinkles her text with stories from women and their doctors, including their successes and failures with different types of traditional and alternative treatments. Similar to Dr. Susan Lark's Fibroid Tumors & Endometriosis Self Help Book (Celestial Arts, 1995), this book is recommended for public libraries and consumer health collections.--Elizabeth A.
