Gr 3-7-Stories by Nicolas Soames about the lives of Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, George Washington, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie and Mahatma Gandhi are featured. Laura Brattan, with a British accent, presents Curie's and Joan of Arc's biographies; Daniel Philpott and Garrick Hagon present the others. The biographies mention where the individuals were born, family life, and how and when they died. Then specifics are given. For example, numerous battles are mentioned in Washington's and Alexander the Great's stories. In Beethoven's biography, his symphonies are mentioned and snippets of his music are included. In the booklet, half of page 7 and 11 are reprinted while the mini-biographies of Pasteur and Curie are omitted. This recording could be used in classroom situations for biography units since each one provides a character description as well as some geography and history facts. However, the pace is so rapid and so many details are presented that additional teacher instruction may be necessary.-Erin Caskey, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
