Part of "Penguin's" beautiful hardback "Clothbound Classics" series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality colourful, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design. Beautiful, clever, rich - and single - Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work.

About the Author

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was modest about her own genius but is one of English literature's greatest and most admired writers. She is the author of Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion.

This is another case where a classic is being reprinted simply as a tie-in to a TV/feature film presentation. Libraries, nonetheless, can benefit by picking up a quality hardcover for a nice price.

"Jane Austen is my favorite author! ... Shut up in measureless content, I greet her by the name of most kind hostess, while criticism slumbers." --EM Forster

Jenny on
With so many versions and prints of Jane Austen's books, sometimes you wonder what makes one better than the other. I think that this is one of the better ones around, because it doesn't have a funny picture of a funny looking girl on the cover! And it's a nice blue! The print is of a good size and the paper is nice too, not like the really squished up text ones on paper so thin that you can see the ink on the other size! The story itself of course is great. One of the better Austen novels out there. Worth a read!

Although Emma is perhaps not one of Austens most likeable heroines (I almost detest her for the first few chapters whenever I re-read the book!), this is an engaging and multi-layered story which is well worth reading. Like the previous reviewer, I am a big fan of these new "Clothbound Classics" hardback editions of Austen's works (as well as many other classics). They're high quality and also a practical size and weight for reading in bed (which is what I do!). I'm in the process of renewing my own collection of Austen's novels from dog-eared paperbacks to a spanking new set of these elegant editions.
