I am a retired U.S. Government scientist (research oceanographer/biologist/ecologist) and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves (Student Pilot/Missile Launch Officer/Science Officer). I have published in various peer-reviewed main-stream science journals. The topics I wrote about included theoretical neurobiology and space physiology; trace-metal distribution and uptake; functional neuro-morphology; and general physiology. I left active duty to go to graduate school where I received a Master of Science degree in Biology; my undergraduate degree is in zoology. I joined the Air Force reserves two years after graduating from graduate school and was in the reserves for 16-years, where I was specifically listed as a chemical research officer (a catchall label at the time for those of us who filled science slots). In this capacity, I worked in aerospace fuel labs, missile propellant labs, a weapon system plating lab/facility, base environmental offices (including the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence HQ /AFCEEHQ) at San Antonio, Texas, and at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research/Chemistry and Life Science Division (AFOSR/NL) in Washington, D.C., where I co-authored a paper on spatial disorientation of F-15 pilots during Desert Storm. I was born in Belfast, Ireland and subsequently placed in a Dublin orphanage. I was brought to America in 1952 on a converted troop-ship by an Air Force Master Sergeant and his wife; I was later formally adopted in south Texas. I became a naturalized citizen in 1971, just before I entered the Air Force's Officer Training School. Between finishing graduate school and before joining the reserves, I was a police officer for a short time in Corpus Christi, Texas (it's an Irish thing I guess). I have been married for 34+ years and my wife is a retired elementary-school teacher. We have two grown daughters; the oldest works with severely handicapped children and the youngest is an aerospace engineer, now doing domestic engineering with our two grandchildren to assist her.
