Reviews

?Willie, Garibaldi, Reed, and several other scholars, both blacks and whites, assessed the educational status of African Americans since 1940. This informative and well-written volume is divided into five sections. They deal with educational change and the Civil Rights Movement, philanthropic assistance from the Rockefeller Foundation, desegregation and educational reform, the "effective schools" model, cuts in financial aid for higher education, and African American attendance at proprietary career schools. In addition, this thought-provoking book explores how institutional racism and class stratification contribute to African Americans' pursuit of careers in science and math, the declining number of African American teachers, black studies programs in postsecondary institutions, and the increase in violence against African Americans on white college campuses. Finally, the book offers recommendations for providing educational excellence for African Americans. Recommended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in teacher preparation programs.?-Choice
