In this brilliant work, the most influential philosopher since Sartre suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.

Many consider "Madness and Civilisation" to be Foucault's masterpiece, but this is my personal favourite. "Discipline and Punish" is an analysis of the history of punishment and the prison in the West, about the gradual move from pure physical punishment to the growth and systematisation of the developing penal model of attempted reform. There is so much that is fascinating here, from the arch of his central thesis (the control of the individual in order to reform the soul) to small asides and throwaway points of view. A great book.
