Bill Pronzini is the author of sixty six novels, including three in collaboration with his wife, the novelist Marcia Muller, and is the creator of the popular Nameless Detective series. A six-time nominee for the Edgar Allan Poe Award (most recently for A Wasteland of Strangers). Pronzini is also the recipient of three Shamus Awards. He lives in Northern California.
Pronzini is one of the best contemporary mystery writers, and he knows his way around a sentence, but if you find yourself frustrated at the lack of action in the middle section of this novel, be patient. Jordan Wise is not a very likable character and his slutty, gold-digger girlfriend, Annalise, is even worse. Jordan, a meek accountant in San Francisco, hates his life and dreams of fleecing his company of thousands of dollars just because it would be easy to do. His dreams become reality when he meets Annalise, and her demands for money and adventure lead him to commit the first "perfect" crime. Fleeing to the Virgin Islands, Jordan soon finds that Annalise's love depends on how much money he showers on her, and she soon tires of the slow life on the islands. Pronzini weaves a tale that would lend itself perfectly to a movie, and it's one of the best Caribbean island stories you'll ever hear. Seldom has a book been better served on audio than this one; Richard Ferrone has the perfect pitch of weary resignation and suppressed anger that makes Jordan Wise a satisfying novel. The author's fans will be waiting to snap up his latest work.-Joseph L. Carlson, Allan Hancock Coll., Lompoc, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
"Pronozini pulls off a seamless tour de force, alternating points of view with each chapter and painting twin portraits of haunted, suffering men...Pronzini is an author no one should miss."
