As with other titles in the 'Compendium' series, the book is laid out clearly and in short but sweet chapters containing concise instructions on 'how to' everything from hemming and serging to edging and pleating. There is a lot of useful information on the practicalities of sewing by machine and hand, and a lot of interesting tips on different raw materials you come across in sewing, but may never have actually learned about (all the different machine feet and what they do, for example). There are also 'Make it' and 'Fix it' sections which tackle small projects and troubleshooting. I found this a very useful book, in providing details that I'd never realised I should know (and am now much the wiser for knowing) and will prove very handy as a reference when undertaking day-to-day sewing (when there's not a heat gun in sight).-Workshop On The Web This book is a great reference guide; I have already used it myself several times. Easy to use, easy to follow and great pictures and diagrams. You can look up any technique you need and find a well written page or 2 telling you how to do it. With 250 techniques from hemming to interfacing, applique to piping it is a good guide to any seamstress. The tips are split into 5 broad categories: Tools & Equipment, Material Matters, In stitches, Sewing Techniques and Decorating Fabrics. If you are new to sewing this is a great sewing bible, and even more experienced seamstresses would pick up plenty of new tricks from it. There are also many quick projects contained within the book including making silk ribbon flowers, cotton napkins and tassels. You'll also find many 'fix it' tips peppered throughout the book, from fixing a hole in a bag to stopping your seams from stretching. This book will be taking pride of place on my bookcase, to hand for the many occasions I will need it!-The Sewing Directory Everything you ever wanted to know about sewing is enclosed in this excellent technique book. It is an ideal reference book for anyone who needs to pick up needle and thread. It contains well illustrated pages on all aspects of sewing, ranging from essential equipment to fabric properties and techniques. Each page is packed with interesting facts, tips and illustrations covering basics and there is also a section on decorative methods. It is aimed at improving skills so the techniques are arranged in order, but it is also possible to search for specific problems with troubleshooting ideas throught the book.
