This issue's book is one of Fox Chapel's new ones. It covers the caricature carving of one of my favorite subjects - golfers. I don't play golf anymore but have played in the past to really appreciate the humor (and frustration) of some of golf's predicaments. Bill Howrilla is a cartoonist as well as a carver and has developed the "funny side" of 12 different golf situations into patterns and "go by" photographs. In Part one, the author does an overview of the carving of golfers including the tools he uses, painting, antiquing and how to do the accessories and bases. Two additional features are his cartoons of various golfer expressions and how to make and use an armature for designing your own golfers. Advanced carvers will appreciate his encouragement for you to produce your own designs and some of the expressions that typify many of golf's situations and frustrations. Part two is a detailed step-by-step sequence of how to carve one of his designs - a golfer that has just gotten up and is contemplating his next moves with a club in one hand and coffee cup in the other. His pattern is very complete with 4 views of the figure from the front, back, both sides and a unique top view. These views leave nothing to the imagination as to what the author had in mind. He includes a detailed section on preparing the band saw blank that should be very valuable for the beginning carver. The step-by-step photos are quite complete. The unique thing he has done is to include, from time to time, a comparison of the carving step with the completed carving. This will help the carver see where the specific step relates to the completed carving. The section concludes with a painting and antiquing guide and six views of the completed carving. Part three is a pattern and photo gallery of 11 additional golfers. Each pose covered in 4 pages with 4 views of the pattern and, in most cases the top view, and photographs of the 5 views of the completed carving. A great addition to your carving library!
