Joanne B. Blanchard, Ph.D., has devoted her life to caring for those who have cared for us and have played key roles in our lives. She earned her bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Cheyney University; two master's degrees from Temple University in Secondary Education with a minor in Urban Education and Secondary Education with a minor in Thematic Teaching; as well as a doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Early Childhood Education. She completed Officer Candidate School at the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Academy. For the past 25 years, Dr. Blanchard has been a caregiver to her mother, who died from congestive heart failure, and a sister and a brother who each died from advanced stages of Huntington's chorea. Caring for these family members provided insight into the challenges a caregiver is faced with on a daily basis. Caregiving itself is a multifaceted responsibility that requires a commitment to researching the facts about the medical conditions with which you are dealing, while still maintaining a good quality of life for yourself.
