Bioenergetics is a dynamic form of therapy based on the teachings of Wilhelm Reich. It links physical pain, muscle tension, and postural disorders with state of mind, demonstrating that suppressed emotions, unhappiness, and anger can block energy-flow and cause physical distress. Dr Alexander Lowen, founder and prime mover of this therapy, analyzes common complaints such as headaches and lower-back pain and shows how they can be overcome by releasing the muscular tension that creates them. Through bioenergetic exercise, physical pain can be dissolved and emotion released, leading to a new sense of confidence and well-being. The author also wrote "Depression and the Body".

Table of Contents

From Reich to bioenergetics; the energy concept; the language of the body; bioenergetic therapy; pleasure - a primary orientation; reality - a secondary orientation; falling anxiety; stress and sex; self-expression and survival; consciousness - unity and duality.

Lowen provides some good background and examples to wet the appetite for more information, more understanding and greater insight into Bioenergetics. The premise of Bioenergetics is an intuitive sense that the body remembers and 'armors' itself against psychological conflict, resulting in various muscle tensions. There are times however, where the simplicity of inferred causation is kinda cheesy, a bit too 'Freud and his penis'. There is plenty of evidence that the early life of a child provides the fundamental building blocks of personality but the idea that episodes from very early childhood (2years and younger) can be recalled and used in self-reporting seems a bit of a stretch. I dont doubt the likelihood that such episodes are traumatic and leave a residue but that they can be recalled with any clarity, and so,there are moments where I loose my grasp on Lowens reality.

While i have my misgivings over some of the causative narratives, many others 'ring true' and are worth further investigation. So, book is great as a taster, but all the depth is in Lowens other publications and at least a few of them will be in my next book buying spree.
