Although Joy Marensky was a closet binge eater as a teenager and had another bout with it in her adult years, she has overcome it and has learned that it was not unique to her; but many, many others have gone through it or are suffering through it right now and need help. She knows from her own personal experience that even closest friends might not be aware that it's even happening. Sharing what she has learned and researched about it with others not only helps to fortify her; but also will help others who are seeking information about what causes it including certain mental instabilities. No one should have to contend with this condition on their own. Her way of helping others is to share information that will hopefully motivate them to conquer or get a grip on this condition before it literally ruins their life as it almost did hers and was trying to do to her teenage daughter as well. Being knowledgeable about the psychology of it can shed light on how to handle it which is what she writes about.
