Brilliant and terrifying * Observer *
Naipaul has fashioned a work of intense imaginative force. It is a
haunting creation, rich with incident and human bafflement, played
out in an immense detail of landscape rendered with a poignant
brilliance. -- Elizabeth Hardwick
