Born in Somalia in 1955, the daughter of an African diplomat, Iman was studying political science at Nairobi University when she was discovered by photographer Peter Beard who arranged for her to come to the United States to begin a career in modeling. Her first assignment was for American Vogue in 1975, and she quickly went on to become the most successful black model and a star on international runways and in magazines. Iman continued at the top of her field for more than a decade, appearing in countless magazines and advertising campaigns. In 1994, she started IMAN Cosmetics for skin of color and, in 2000, she launched a second line, I-IMAN Makeup. The mother of two daughters, she lives with her husband, musician/actor David Bowie, in New York City.
