A beast. Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog but a horrible new creature who walks upright - a creature with fangs and claws and hair springing from every pore. I am a monster. You think I'm talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It's no deformity, no disease. And I'll stay this way forever - ruined - unless I can break the spell. Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I'll tell you. I'll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. And then, I'll tell you how I became perfectly...beastly.

Alot of Kid novels are easily accesible to adults as well as children but Beastly by Alex Flinn is not. This is a great book for anyone under 14 but an older audience would just find the characters flat and unimaginative. The main character of Kyle is an arrogant 9th grader to the point that at some points you want to throw the book because he is THAT shallow but as the story goes on we do see his character change and develop into a decent human being which is a positive lesson for the young reader.

Beastly is a good book to read to your children or if you love modern takes on Fairytales, but if you are of the older audience I don't believe this is the book for you.

I really enjoyed this book. It is the classic Beauty and the Beast made modern and told from the Beasts point of view. It gave an interesting perspective into what it was like for the (in this case) once attractive teenage boy as a hideous beast. Well worth reading.
