Reviews

The Asterix books represent the very summit of our achievement as a literary race. In Asterix one finds all of human life. The fact that the books were written originally in French is no matter. I have read them all in many languages and, like all great literature, they are best in English. Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, Asterix's translators since the very beginning, have made great books into eternal flames.--THE TIMES A cartoon drawn with such supreme artistry, and a text layered with such glorious wordplay, satire and historical and political allusion that no reader should ever feel like they've outgrown it.--TIME OUT

Including double-crossing double-crossers being double-crossed and who knows what else this is easily one of THE best books in the entire Asterix series; and therefore of all time. Asterix is great in this one and the story line gets so hopelessly muddled and confusing that you find yourself a little dizzy just reading it! Brilliantly excecuted, great conclusion, a classic.

Great stuff, the story about the cauldron of silver is just classic fairy tale stuff. The adventure is one of intrigue and just as you think you know the twists and turns there is always an Asterix-esque ending which catches you off guard. All in all though it’s the usual tom-foolery: feasting and fighting. Just the way I love it!

Classic. Simply classic. I love this book. The story is a wonderful circular narrative in which Asterix volunteers to take care of a cauldron full of money for a visiting chief. The money is then stolen, and Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix set out on a quest to refill it, lest they be banished from the village forever. However, in a brilliant twist involving a bureaucratic tax-collector and the smell of onion soup, Asterix realizes that all is not as it seems, and our heroes save the day (of course) once again. A great book - highly recommended.
