Reviews

The Asterix books represent the very summit of our achievement as a literary race. In Asterix one finds all of human life. The fact that the books were written originally in French is no matter. I have read them all in many languages and, like all great literature, they are best in English. Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, Asterix's translators since the very beginning, have made great books into eternal flames.--THE TIMES A cartoon drawn with such supreme artistry, and a text layered with such glorious wordplay, satire and historical and political allusion that no reader should ever feel like they've outgrown it.--TIME OUT

Chris Parker on

An interesting story as Asterix and Obelix travel Gaul to get the best food it has to offer. The usual mix of fights, puns and a bit of latin thrown in for free.
Colin Burt on

A very good entry in the series as Asterix and Obelix journey around France in defiance of the Romans barricade around their village. This book is particularly funny if you are familiar with France and its various regions, as many of the stereotypes of regional France are gently poked fun at in this book - although the story can be equally enjoyed by those who know nothing of France. And by the end, Obelix has found a little companion for a friend.
Richard Scott on

The Romans have surrounding the Gaulish village. Asterix makes a bet with their commander that he can get out, and take a tour de France, to retrieve a delicacy from each region, for a big banquet.

They will invite the commander to join them, as proof of victory. Any form of transport will do, even if Obelix has to carry a horse. No bikes to be seen though!
