About the Author

Joy Aquino Siapno is a scholar and musician. She was born in the Phlippines, raised in California, and lived in East Timor (Timor Leste). She completed her B.A. at Wellesley College, an M.A. at University of London, and a Ph.D. at University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of academic articles and books, including "A Society with Music is a Society with Hope," "Dance and Martial Arts in Timor Leste," and "Gender, Islam, Nationalism, and the State in Aceh." She previously worked as Vice Rector at Universidade da Paz, Timor Leste; Associate Professor at the Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University, Korea; and as Lecturer in Political Science and Asian Studies at University of Melbourne, Australia. She was married to Fernando La Sama and tried to build a home, a university, and a music program in Timor Leste. They have a son, Hadomi. Hadomi de Araujo is 12 years old, is in Grade 7, plays the cello and saxophone, and is proud to be both a Mambai from Manutasi, Ainaro and also from Pangasinan. Therese Tam Nguyen is a Professor at the Universidade Nacional Timor Leste. Jose Tanesib Anuno has worked for a long-time as the District Administrator of Oecussi. A.M., who prefers to remain Anonymous, is from Suai and is a scholar. Vitalia Ze is a poet and writer based in Dili. Gil Mauberismo Transformador and Virgilio da Silva Guterres are poets and close colleagues of Hadomi's father in RENETIL and Fundasaun Haburas. Jay Siapno was a writer, journalist, and artist; he died in 2012, two years after he re-built Hadomi's torched house in Delta 1.
