One of the most revered college-radio bands of the late 1980s and early '90s, Pixies combined smart yet surreal pop with jagged, punk-influenced rock and, oddly enough, broke up just as the alternative music scene went mainstream. Fueled by Black Francis's oft-maniacal vocals and bizarrely catchy songs, the Boston-based quartet--rounded out by bassist/vocalist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago, and drummer David Lovering--consistently crafted fascinating albums during their brief but headstrong run. This 23-track collection, released in tandem with their highly anticipated 2004 reunion tour, captures many of their finest moments.
Proceeding semi-chronologically, WAVE OF MUTILATION begins with the rambunctious ditty "Bone Machine." Other early gems include the strange anthem "Holiday Song," the anthropomorphic ode "Caribou," and Deal's signature song, "Gigantic." The band's beloved 1989 album, DOOLITTLE, is amply represented by seven songs, including the pleading "Hey," the mischievous "Monkey Gone to Heaven," the fierce "Debaser," and the pop-perfect "Here Comes Your Man." Latter-day tunes include rockers such as "Dig for Fire," "Alec Eiffel," and "Planet of Sound," along with two B-sides, "Into the White" and an excellent cover of Neil Young's "Winterlong." If you're looking for the Pixies motherlode, this is it.

OMG. well, this was my introduction to the Pixies. if you are wanting an example of the awesomeness of the Pixies to show to someone, or to have for your own collection, this is worth a look. All the classics and has lead to 3 more Pixies purchases for me, plus a concert ticket.

meh not for me i'm afraid. I bought this after buying doolittle and found that i liked their albums more than the collections. So i would reccomend giving this a miss and instead buy surferrosa, come on pilgrim, doolittle and bossanova and then you have all their greats. but as greatsest hits go this is not the worst collection you can buy.

Taken as a whole, this group of Pixies songs has a more alternative feel, comparing this album to "Doolittle" or "Bossanova".
One to play a bit louder, for sure. Glad to see that odd little Bone Machine included. Again, a fine collection. If you just want to give The Pixies a shot, this is a reasonable choice to start with.

Pixies are simply amazing and deserve all the credit they get. Just like this is a great album. Wave of Mutilation is deffinately the best of the pixies. Its fusion of insanity and melody. This is a 23 track album and not suprisingly i loved every single song on it. In my books the pixies are legendary Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering are simply amazing!
