Performer Notes - Recording information: Sunsplash.
- It's no secret that Bob Marley means everything to Jamaican pop music. Charismatic to a fault, courageous, defiant, and compassionate as well as being a world-class songwriter and performer, Marley recast Jamaica as Marleyville in the eyes and ears of the rest of the world. This 20-track collection features covers of Marley tunes along with tribute sides recorded by Jamaican artists following Marley's death in 1981. The end result is a varied yet internally coherent set that not only pays tribute to Marley but also demonstrates the flexible durability of his songbook. Highlights include Toots Hibbert's moving two-part "(Marley's Gone) His Songs Live On" (part one opens this collection while part two closes it) which was recorded live at Reggae Sunsplash. and Ernie Smith's impressive interpretation of "You Poured Sugar on Me," a song that reminds that even though Marley is a figure remembered and admired for his many fine songs dealing with political and social injustice, he was also a man who wrote breathlessly beautiful love songs. ~ Steve Leggett
