Released in 1992, Tomb of the Mutilated helped establish Cannibal Corpse's reputation as one of metal's goriest, most vile outfits. Boasting some of the sickest album art and song titles of all time, the band's attention-getting tactics worked perfectly and record sales soared. Cannibal Corpse then became one of the biggest names in the death metal genre -- just as the group's discs and live performances were being banned all over the world. Listeners unfamiliar with the belching vocal style and pummeling drum and guitar attack typical of death metal probably won't understand what separates this or any other record that adheres so stringently to the genre's formula, but learned fans have come to appreciate Tomb of the Mutilated as a solid, if not important, offering. Vocalist Chris Barnes' constant barrage of Cookie Monster-esque lowdown grunting is pretty much unintelligible throughout, leaving his gross-out lyrics offensive only to those who read them. However, the effect works nicely and maintains tradition. Standout tracks include "Beyond the Cemetery" -- which boasts the record's best riffs -- and speedier cuts like "Split Wide Open" and "The Cryptic Stench." Generally not taken seriously in many metal quarters due to their fascination with cartoonish gore, Cannibal Corpse somehow managed to outlast many of their more critically accepted contemporaries due in no small part to early career efforts like Tomb of the Mutilated, with its powerful musical focus. ~ Vincent Jeffries

A pretty good album worth giving a spin. If you have heard any other Cannibal Corpse albums then this one should fit right in. Features the infamous "Hammer Smashed Face" hit the songs are slightly heavier than in the previous albums, as Cannibal Corpse albums tend to do; plus there's nothing wrong with songs telling stories about acts of gore; better than constantly hearing about wanting to do the opposite sex. This album has a more technical approach to it than the previous ones, so it is truly worth adding to your death metal collection. Vocals are nice and gutty too.
anyone in their right mind would look at the album cover and never look back, unfortunatly i have a mate who looked at the album cover and bought the horrible stuff, me and acouple other guys refuse to ride in his car now s he plays this stuff and it is just disgusting, not right at all
Before the weed destroyed Chris Barnes' brain completely, he recorded a few good albums with Cannibal Corpse. This is their most famous one, featuring Hammer Smashed Face which was on the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Banned in Germany, this is a good album by a good band, released before they became redundant.
"Hammer Smashed Face" is my favourite Cannibal Corpse song, which is probably why Tomb of the mutilated is my favourite Cannibal Corpse album. The guitar riffs are very catchy and technicsal, the bass playing is technical, the drumming is good and Chris Barnse' vocals are sicker than ever.
This is the best Cannibal Corpse album and proves to be a death metal essential. Chris Barnes' vocals re alot stronger here than on later albums, the guitar work is strong, the bass work and drumming are good and it includes my all time favourite Cannibal Corpse song "Hammer Smashed Face". THe lyrics are pretty stupid though, Carcass did the same thing, but better
I seriously can not believe that a band like this can find fame, who on this earth wants to listen to songs about this??? seriously, i mean songas like I Cum Blood and Entrails Ripped From A Virgin's Cunt just make you wonder how some one can have such a disgusting mind
Cannible Corpse is Absolutly horrible and this is just another case of it, who wants to hear someone scream about ripping people up, having saex with dead people and what not??? music should have lyrics that make you think or are catchy or are aout something people can respect, who wants to hear these rapists taliing about their hobbies????
