RES-ERECTED captures 18 of the best songs from the late 1970s/early '80s U.K. band The Members, including smash hit "Working Girl."
This album contains a mix of "Sound of the Suburbs" that has never been on CD before.
Personnel: Nigel Bennett (vocals, guitar); Nicky Tesco (vocals); Gary Baker (guitar); Simon Lloyd (alto saxophone, trumpet); Adam Maitland (alto saxophone); Dick Cuthell (flugelhorn, vibraphone); Chuck Sabo, Adrian Lillywhite (drums).
Liner Note Authors: Adrian Thrills; Phill Jupitus.
Somewhat surprisingly, Res: Erected (terrible title, that) is the first truly comprehensive Members anthology. Most previous compilations have pretended that the Members broke up around 1980 or so, following the release of their difficult second album 1980: The Choice Is Yours. While it's true that the majority of the yobbish reggae-punkers' best work was accomplished in the barely 18 months between the release of 1978's "Solitary Confinement" and 1979's "Offshore Banking Business," the Members' later years weren't entirely useless. That uneven second album sounds much better with its high points summarized here (a ripping cover of Larry Wallis' "Police Car," the snarky anti-romantic sentiments of "Physical Love" sounding like a response to the Au Pairs' feminist Brit-funk), and for all the faults of their third and final album, the marvelous "Working Girl" is a stone classic, one of the greatest U.K. pop singles of 1982. For the full picture, start here, then pick up Captain Oi's expanded reissues of the three proper albums if so inspired. (At the very least, 1979's At the Chelsea Nightclub is as good as the Ruts' more celebrated punk-reggae hybrid.) ~ Stewart Mason
