For Allison Crowe, a peerless live performer, and a singer-songwriter of the
thrilling calibre known in the 1960s, Spiral is the seventh release from her
label, Rubenesque Records, in as many years. Musical production wrapped on
Valentine's Day.
Spiral contains eight of Crowe's original songs, ranging from the tender and
playful country/roots of "Dearly", to the upbeat pop of "Double-Edged
Swords", 'cross the loving "Oceans", and darker terrain of "I Don't Know"
and the hard rocking title track. Raw, natural, emotion is embraced
passionately with elegiac beauty and melody in these, and such joy-filled
tunes as "Going Home Tonight" and "No Matter the Battle". With the live
track, "Wake Up", Crowe, again, renders the personal universal, and the
global, human.
Uniquely known not just as one of the most exciting songwriters of a new
generation, Crowe is also one of our finest interpreters of popular song.
Spiral's mix of light and shadow includes a trio of fresh covers -
revisiting music of Annie Lennox ("Why"), Leonard Cohen ("Chelsea Hotel No.
2"), and Hunters and Collectors' Antipodean anthem, "Throw Your Arms Around
Me".
On this new song collection, the bi-coastal Canadian, (she calls Corner
Brook, Newfoundland and Nanaimo, British Columbia, home), is joined by
ideally-skilled and sympathetic west-coast musicians Billie Rocha-Woods
(acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Dave Baird (bass, backing vocals),
Laurent Boucher (percussion), Brendan Millbank (cello) and Larry Anschell
(electric guitar, and, also, Engineer/Producer at Turtle Studios in White
Rock, B.C.)
Kayla Schmah, Los Angeles-based, Canadian-born, composer and film scorer,
orchestrates and produces the album with, yes, "gorgeous" musical textures,
and cinematic ideas artfully brought to life. Concert capturings by
Engineers B.R.N. (aka Condor) and John MacMillan complete this diverse mix
of music made in Corner Brook, Nanaimo, as well as Chilliwack, White Rock,
Denman Island and Salt Spring Island, Canada, Vienna, Austria, and
Hollywood, USA.
The visual art of Spiral matches its aural beauty - with cover paintings by
Netherlands-based Tara Thelen, photographs by Canada's Billie Rocha-Woods,
and California's Dan Goldwasser, fontage from Brazil's Billy Argel and
graphic design by Florida's Alix Whitmire.

"Spiral" is the latest album by Canadian singer Allison Crowe. Is it a good one?
I certainly think so! Having recently discovered Allison's music on Jamendo at the beginning of the year, I am lucky I found out about her just in time for the release of "Spiral"! As I've said, I heard Allison's music through Jamendo.com, so that got me into Allison's music and got me prepared for her latest offering!
"Spiral", yet again, is another great album by Allison, it is also a lot more complex as well because there are strings featured on many of the great songs on the CD! "Dearly", the opening track is fantastic to listen to, while "Double-Edged Swords" is a great song that Allison does! I could go on about each song on the CD, but I won't. I will, however, list my favourites, which are "Dearly", "Double-Edged Swords", "Chelsea Hotel No.2" (a Leonard Cohen song), "Wake Up" (a nice emotional song that was done live), "Oceans", "I Don't Know" (another great song featuring strings), "Spiral", "Throw Your Arms Around Me (a great cover version of the original by Hunters & Collectors), "Why" (a great cover version of an Annie Lennox song), "Going Home Tonight" and "No Matter The Battle"! Having heard "Going Home Tonight" before the rest of the album (thanks to a preview on Jamendo.com), I knew it was going to be a great song and I had a great feeling about the album! Sure enough, Allison proved me right, it is a great album!
Oh! I forgot to mention that there are 2 bonus tracks on the CD, which are extra versions of "Why" and "Throw Your Arms Around Me"!
I totally recommend this CD to anyone who likes this kind of music. To hear what Allison sounds like, I recommend you search for her on www.jamendo.com, or go to her website at www.allisoncrowe.com, even her blog at http://allisoncrowe.blogspot.com is a great visit as it is kept up to date by Allison and her manager Adrian!

Allison Crowe's Spiral is a great cd. If you like the unique Canadian sounds of people like Sarah Mclachlan and Jann Arden, you'll love Allison Crowe too. She does it all on her own, she is an independent, self funded singer songwriter, she isn't with the big labels but still manages to be successful at it. She has her own style, many Canadian artists seem to manage doing that somehow, (apart from Celine Dion, well we won't go there!) Allison does a brilliant rendition of "Throw your arms arounds me" the old Hunters and Collectors classic, I'm a Mark Seymour fan and she definately does the song justice! She is one of the rare people these days who can move you with her voice, she sends shivers down your spine. I bought Spiral and then had to go out and get all the other albums, I can't get enough. She's brilliant. Go on her wedsite www.allisoncrowe.com to have a listen to her songs and find out a little more about her, I bet you'll come home a fan. Go on, have a look. :)
