Performer Notes
Liner Note Author: Gene Sculatti.
Although his biggest chart hits like 1957's "Honeycomb," "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" and "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" were definitely built for pop success, Jimmie Rodgers was essentially a folk artist at heart, and if the early publicity hype called him "a cross between Elvis Presley and Burl Ives," a fairly laughable claim, taking Presley's name out and pasting in Buddy Holly's instead would make a statement that rings closer to the truth. Rodgers recorded several albums for Roulette Records between 1958 and 1962, two of which, 1958's Jimmie Rodgers Sings Folk Songs and 1960's At Home With Jimmie Rodgers, are combined here on a single disc, and they fit so well together that they make a completely seamless 24-track sequence highlighted by an airy version of "Bo Diddley," a gently and darkly chiming "Lord Randal," a haunting take on John Jacob Niles' faux folk ballad "Black Is the Color," a jaunty "The Wreck of the 'John B,'" and the dark narrative "The Hangman." No, there's isn't a trace of Elvis Presley here, but the easy, natural warmth of a Burl Ives is, and if Rodgers isn't exactly folk rock, he clearly prefigured it. ~ Steve Leggett

Jimmie s third album from 1958 paired with one of two albums he released in 1960 anybody fond of the folk music of the era will find plenty to love here! For instance, the verse melody to his rendition of 'Lord Randal' on 'Sings Folk Songs' provided the melody for Dylan s 'A Hard Rain s A-Gonna Fall', while 'At Home' features two songs, 'Come Along Julie' and 'Find the Girl (New Land)', penned by a very young John Stewart!
