Every track on ZIGGY STARDUST & THE SPIDERS FROM MARS sounds like it was pulled from the rock 'n' roll bible. The album created a mythology that reached beyond the Chuck Berry folklorisms of the everyday rocker to create a new type of rock star. With ZIGGY, Bowie created a viable alter-ego to descend onto the planet and wreak havoc on rock's fertile soil. In doing so, he created the most original rock creation since the music's inception 20 years before.
Musically, the album was as inspired as Ziggy's persona. Mick Ronson's snarling guitar evoked the triumphant power of the late '60s guitar heroes, but added a flash so dynamic fans knew why the Spiders were labelled "glitter rockers." As an album, ZIGGY STARDUST told the story of rock through the eyes of Ziggy, an alien--with a narrative that was equally sensational and intimate.
Any doubts as to Bowie's intentions to take over rock were displaced on a closer listen to "Star." At the end of the song Bowie (as Ziggy) whispers, "just watch me now," and his determination is eerily obvious. Combining skills as a mime artist and top-rate vocal dramatist, Bowie created Ziggy, the bisexual space man, who sang "songs of darkness and disgrace." The planet was dying, something made evident on the first track "Five Years," and the only way to survive was to "Hang On To Yourself."
In the end, "they had to break up the band," according to the tale told in ZIGGY STARDUST, but the inevitably tragic strains of this "Rock 'N' Roll Suicide" had left their mark on the dying planet. They are still being felt today.

Rolling Stone (7/20/72, p.54) - "...David Bowie has pulled off his complex task with consummate style, with some great rock & roll...with all the wit and passion required to give it sufficient dimension and with a deep sense of humanity that regularly emerges from behind the star facade...I'd give it at least a 99."

What can I say about a masterpiece that has not been said before?
Not much, except that this is a very good remastered recording. This is a record that I originally owned on vinyl, and it has taken me a while to come back to Bowie on CD.
It's been great to rediscover Ziggy, Young Americans, Diamond Dogs and many others. The great 70's Bowie albums really stand up after all these years - I remember why he made such an impression on me in my younger years.
Every music fan should have a copy of this album in their collection.

more awesome music from david bowie, who is pretty much THE icon of the 80s, with his alter ego ziggy stardust. there are tons of awesome tracks on here, such as suffragette city, adn five years. some of the lyrics are a bit weird, they tend to go off on a few tangents, but all in all, this album is a must own for fans.

this is a really nice album from david bowie, whose fame really increased once he created his fictional alter ego character of ziggy stardust. there are plenty of nice melodic tracks on here, such as "Lady Stardust" and "Five Years", both of which are faves. some of the lyrics go a bit awry, but all in all, this album is good.

I like this album melody-wise; however all the stupid lyrics about Spiders From Mars and the like piss me off. Musically it is great and although I wholeheartedly approve of concept albums I don't approve of this concept. Why spoil great songs with nonsense about a fictional 'rock star' (God, I hate that term) from outer space who fannies about with a fictional band with a shit name?! David, you could have done so much better. Ground it in realism, not shite. Still, the music is nice.

This Red Planet arachnids disk is clearly the best album so far, I think. The songs are stronger overall, from the opener, right up to the crescendo at the end of Rock 'N Roll Suicide.
Even some groovy guitar riffs, for example Moonage Daydream, and, of course, Suffragette City, where you also get a bit of fuzz, to go with all the bizarre pop lyrics on the rest of the album.
