It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever. So when the time came to adapt his music for the film version of the monumentally successful theatrical work, Webber enlisted the aid of longtime collaborators Nigel Wright and Simon Lee. They produced an expanded orchestral version of the score, grander and more sumptuous than the original, and assembled a 100-member ensemble to do it justice.

I am a huge fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage show, and while this is not my favourite cast, they are all splendidly talented and a pleasure to listen to. Years after it originally premiered and many performers later, Crawford and Brightman are still favourites of many in their respective roles.
ALW has a contract disallowing other casts to record the show in English, meaning this is the only full cast recording of the stage Phantom that legally and officially exists. There have been several cast recordings in foreign languages, but the only other official English recordings are "highlights" CDs. It's a bit of a pity, as there are many fabulous new casts around the world that will not have the chance to be heard.
For those of you who have recently seen the stage show and are looking for something similar to listen to, or for those of you who are curious as to how this musical was originally intended, this is the CD to buy.
A must for fans of both the stageshow and the movie.
It includes tracks that wasn't included in the movie and Brightmans voice; just sublime. My personal favourite is 'masquerade', which is a tempo slower than the movie version and far more dramatic.
The compositions are also slightly different and well worth the extra price.
