Gary Smulyan, one of the top baritonists in straight-ahead jazz of the early 21st century, has a deep tone a little reminiscent of Pepper Adams along with a hard-driving style. More Treasures showcases Smulyan in a trio/quartet with pianist Mike LeDonne on five of the nine selections. All nine of the obscurities, each written by a different jazz musician, are based on the chord changes of older standards. Smulyan, who contributed "Beautiful You," is in top form, romping through the songs effortlessly. Bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Steve Johns keep the music swinging and driving, offering a perfect foundation for Smulyan's flights. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (p.67) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Chick Corea's 'Chick's Tune' emerges as the album's centerpiece ballad, while Gigi Gryce's 'San Souci' breaks a sweat as TREASURES' bonafide burner."
JazzTimes (p.79) - "This one mostly burns from the start and seldom lets up until the smoke clears with the final notes."
