Although her name isn't lauded as loudly as Billie Holiday's or Ella Fitzgerald's, Sarah Vaughan was a singer of comparable talent, skill, and allure. GOLD, a two-disc compilation, makes a compelling case for the claim. Vaughan's resonant alto, rich and husky, yet crystalline in its phrasing, is on display across 30 tracks, including "Misty," "Summertime," "All of Me," and "Body and Soul." As usual, the GOLD series maintains its high standard of song selection, sequencing, informative liner notes, and handsome packaging, all of which shine here, but it's the performances that make the set a must. Her version of "Lover Man" is alone worth the price of the package.
