I still have not received the Emmy Lou Harris CD. More than likely has been lost. Which will be second time in as many days.
I promised myself not to buy any more of these original album Rhino series. the packaging is an insult to any collector and after all this is their market. No booklet, no notes, no extra pictures, the LP's replicas are not really replicas, they should take a lesson from the mono box by Bob Dylan. the bad news is that not only things have not improved but they have worsened, even the box in which these cd's are put has become thinner that what they were in the K. Kristofferson and Lou Reed boxes I have, combined with the fact that amazon Europe is also using thinner envelopes for their shipping the box came all mashed up. I can only just hope they improve this, although it seems a megacorp has bought Rhino (what the hell happened to one of the best reissue label!!!) and someone is trying to maximize profit to get one of those hefty bonuses.
But even that cannot destroy the greatness of these 5 albums, which are the output of Emmylou Harris in the 70's. Although Harris has recorded many great albums in the forthcoming years, nothing compares to the freshness of these five albums, not the singing and not the scope of songs she sang. Harris can fairly rock when she wants to, as in "You never can tell" but her strong is the ballads. You'll find here hits like "Pancho and Lefty" (Which is the first recorded version of one of the greatest Townes Van Zandt songs) as well as "To Daddy", "Boulder to Birmingham", etc... As a matter of fact one of her best selling records of all times is Profile Vol.1: the Best of Emmylou Harris which is a compilations of songs from these five records. But, you'll also find here a lot of less known treasures that you will surely enjoy.
The recordings seems to me the 2002 remastered releases but the extra tracks that came with the remasters are not here. The sound is great to my ears. No liners note, so we don't really now. As much as I remember the original LP's these were great recordings with a great sound.
There have been over the years many compilations of Emmylou Harris but at this price I believe this is the best introduction to Emmylou Harris. Compared with other boxes of these series, there are no fillers here and all these records are the best of the best that Emmylou Harris recorded. I am very happy I did not keep my promise and couldn't stand not having these 5 albums again. Highly recommended.
