  • Kevin Rowland's career was based around the idea of being wilfully perverse, but even ardent followers were baffled by this album. The immaculately dressed band on the record sleeve gives little indication of the bizarre nature of the music within. Songs drift along for several minutes as Rowland talks with guitar player Billy Adams about his feelings. Suddenly the talk stops, and the songs burst spectacularly into life, most notably on the brilliant "This Is What She's Like," in its full ten-minute glory. DON'T STAND ME DOWN remains Rowland's definitive artistic statement, but it also managed to destroy his commercial standing in one fell swoop.
