In many ways Merle Haggard is the most American of songwriters, more interested in saying what is on his mind than in any sort of philosophical consistency, political or otherwise. The end result of this has been a body of work that is remarkably varied, even as it has always sounded exactly like Merle Haggard. Few of his contemporaries can match his directness and honesty when it comes to writing about relationships, and his love songs are less romantic than they are quietly desperate stories of the completely believable. This brief set just scratches the surface of Haggard's musings on love, lust, and the degradation of trust, but it does have some gems, including the stunning "If We Make It Through December," the brutally honest "It's Not Love (But It's Not Bad)," and the truly classic "Hungry Eyes." In the end, though, this compilation is just too short to really do more than hint at Haggard's range on the subject of hearts in jeopardy. ~ Steve Leggett
