- Britain's premier instrumental pop band in the 1960s, the Shadows, who began as Cliff Richard's backup band in the late '50s, were a little bit tamer and more refined than the various American surf bands they are most similar to, although only by degree. Led by guitarist Hank Marvin, the Shadows charted several hits, beginning with their signature "Apache" from 1960, and most of these are collected in this 22-track set, making it a pretty good introduction to this understated but important British instrumental combo. ~ Steve Leggett
