- While Buffy Sainte-Marie was never much of a commercial juggernaut in the United States (even at the height of the Folk Revival), this comeback album--her first record in 15 years--undeservedly disappeared from the market on arrival in 1992. Comparable to another singer-songwriter comeback of 1992, Leonard Cohen's THE FUTURE, COINCIDENCE & LIKELY STORIES finds another ex-folkie in step with the digitalia of the modern age. Draped by synth swells and some electronic beats (and only the occasional acoustic guitar), Buffy Sainte-Marie delivers a strong cycle with a defiant message of Native American injustice. Standout track "Starwalker" echoes her '60s classic "He's A Keeper of the Fire," while "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" rips corporate pollution and defends Leonard Peltier over rifling guitar riffs. Her tremoloing voice--one of the most under-appreciated instruments in '60s folkdom--sounds in peak form here expressing tenderness, vivacity, and outrage with equal, resonating power.
Professional Reviews Rolling Stone (11/26/92, p.74) - 3 Stars - Good - "..a winning comeback...11 songs that have deep thematic resonance and that are among her most appealing work.."
Q (5/92, p.84) - 3 Stars - Good - "..fans won't be disappointed.." Spin (5/92, p.76) - Highly Recommended - "..[this release] marks the welcome return of an authentic angry voice...her righteous fury delivers the big thrills.."
Musician (8/25, p.88) - "..not since Tina Turner has a nearly forgotten veteran reinvented herself to such stunning effect...Saint-Marie has somehow discovered a sound that's leaner, scarier and more spontaneous than anything to which she's previously put her name.."
New York Times (Publisher) (9/11/92, p.C24) - "..a devastating litany of continuing corporate and governmental injury to indians. The outrage is bolstered by lean, catchy folk-pop melodies.."
