The man that America came to love as the earthy, good-natured sheriff of Mayberry (and later as the sagacious attorney Matlock) quite logically turns out to be an effective storyteller on THE CHRISTMAS GUEST. This album of Christmas songs and stories is hardly without precedent, of course; Griffith's been doing this sort of thing for years and has it down to a science. On the stories, he reads warmly but authoritatively over acoustic musical backing of an appropriately Yuletide bent. The songs are mostly gospel-based, spiritually oriented tunes where Griffith's lived-in, comfy old shoe of a voice rings out over slightly bluegrass-flavored arrangements (several country and bluegrass heavyweights are on hand). The only thing missing is a comic-relief track from Andy's beloved old deputy, Don Knotts.
