On this beautifully contemplative album, Lee allows his unaccompanied bamboo flute to imitate the songs of nature, which make up the "dream" from which Buddha awakened when he meditated under the Bodhi tree. With attention, the unique tenor of each performance emerges. "Melting Snow" takes a rasping, insistent turn that sounds like a human voice. The melody in "Ocean Mist" oscillates and then doubles. "By the River" also makes use of overdubbed unison melodies to mimic a plaintive conversation or lament. The high notes in "Seabreezes" fly dizzyingly skyward. "As the Water Flows" is a full-bodied, extremely slow-moving tune that ends the album on a deeply peaceful note. This track would be ideal for the end of a yoga session as one rests in corpse pose. While some records provide a supportive environment for meditation, paying close attention to Lee's playing is a Zen meditation itself.
