Performer Notes
  • Recorded between 1939 and 1946. Includes liner notes by Joseph F. Laredo.
  • Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips and Steven Lasker.
  • The Ink Spots were the first modern black vocal group, and although chiefly known for their wonderful harmonies, which bridged the gap between 1940s pop styles and the street corner doo wop styles of the 1950s, they were also a self-contained band, and a versatile one. Led by lead singers Deek Watson and Bill Kenny (whose other worldly high tenor and mannered diction put him in a class by himself), and grounded by Hoppy Jones' innovative (and often improvised) talking-bass vocal lines, the Ink Spots charted nearly 50 Top 40 singles beginning with "If I Didn't Care" in 1939. The Best of the Ink Spots collection works as a decent introduction to this wonderful group. Highlights include a fine version of Duke Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and a completely modern take on Leroy Carr's "When the Sun Goes Down," recast here as a pop blues with harmonies that would make the Beach Boys blush. ~ Steve Leggett

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 31/12/2011

For those not yet acquainted with Los Angeles based The Dear & Departed they are fronted by
none other than our very own celebrity kiwi Dan Smith who stars on top rating US reality television
show L.A INK alongside Kat Von D filmed on location at High Voltage Tattoo in California. Since
the band's inception, The Dear & Departed have risen from strength to strength cementing a die-
hard fan base. The band are ecstatic to finally release music in New Zealand, a place Dan still
refers to as home.

Their new EP Chapters features 5 brand new tracks of classic British influenced new wave rock,
drawing influences from the likes of The Cure, New Order, and The Jam. Infectious melody,
undeniable hooks and stellar production courtesy of New Found Glory's Chad Gilbert, this is a
must-have release for this summer's collection.

Frontman Dan Smith will be returning home to our shores this weekend to promote the new
record alongside showcasing his talent at the NZ Tattoo & Art Festival in New Plymouth on Nov
27th and 28th.

Tracks:
1 Tambourine Love
2 Matter Of Time
3 Did You Hear A Knock?
4 It Looks Like Rain
5 There For The Taking
