• Given the seemingly relentless reissuing and repackaging of Bob Marley's work, it's understandable that consumers might roll their eyes at yet another compilation featuring many of the reggae legend's best-known songs. In fact, aside from "Soul Rebel" and "Three Little Birds," all of the first 17 tracks on AFRICA UNITE are available on Island's stellar GOLD set. What truly distinguishes this 2005 collection is a trio of remixes.
  
• The title track, which originally appeared on 1979's SURVIVAL, is remixed here by Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, who streamlines the song, stripping away some of the instrumentation in favor of a rawer groove. Ashley Beedle's "Stand Up Jamrock" is a mash-up of Marley's classic call-to-arms "Get Up, Stand Up" and his son Damian "Junior Gong" Marley's dancehall-tinged hit "Welcome to Jamrock." The real jewel in AFRICA UNITE's crown, however, is the previously unreleased "Slogans," which takes a demo vocal track that Marley recorded in '79 and gives it updated backing by a group that includes Eric Clapton (who famously covered "I Shot the Sheriff") and another one of Marley's sons, Stephen. This charming "new" song stays true to Marley's laid-back, late-'70s roots vibe, and its inclusion makes AFRICA UNITE that much more noteworthy.
