Performer Notes - A major creative leap from 2007's MARRY ME, Annie Clark's debut as St. Vincent, ACTOR is a richly textured pop record full to the brim with memorable tunes, detailed and luscious arrangements, and clever lyrics. Clark, a multi-instrumentalist who previously worked with Sufjan Stevens and the Polyphonic Spree, is a gifted songwriter and arranger with a sweet pure-pop voice that shines through on tracks such as "The Strangers," the lush, dreamy (save for one unexpectedly rocking interlude) lead track. ACTOR is another lovely, and satisfying album from this enigmatic talent.
Professional Reviews Spin (p.92) - "[S]he's always juxtaposed the cruel and the kind, and here, the baroque arrangements are even more complex and her voice even prettier, with both only underlining the dark currents running through her songs."
Spin (p.30) - Ranked #23 in Spin's "40 Best Albums Of 2009" -- "[She] reveals a shrewdly sinister streak."
Entertainment Weekly (p.59) - "It's a uniquely potent cocktail of sounds and moods that'll get you hooked, fast." -- Grade: A
Billboard (p.34) - "[The album] shows her versatility as both a composer and performer....It's the detail and charm listeners have come to expect mixed with these welcome surprises that keep ACTOR exciting."
Q (Magazine) (p.131) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Throughout this constantly surprising second album, she can echo the spectral weariness of Mary Margaret O'Hara one moment, the overt prettiness of Feist the next."
Blender (Magazine) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Her second album is rowdier and less well-behaved, and thus better, although the template is the same: breathy coos and lush strings intermittently blown apart by distorted guitar blasts."
Pitchfork (Website) - "Her lyrics are sympathetic observations rendered with clear, economical language focused on a specific moment of conflict or epiphany....Clark's compositions hone in on precise fluctuations in mood, and flesh out complex inner worlds for the women suggested in her lyrics."
