Rita Hayworth returned to Columbia Pictures in 1941 - after a short stint away with other studios - to star with Fred Astaire in this musical comedy about a Broadway dance director who finds himself drafted into the Army. Although she was not a fully-fledged star, many speculated that the pair were mismatched... but Hayworth silenced the sceptics with her dancing abilities and performance, establishing a great screen partnership and creating a magical musical that counts 2 Academy Award nominations (for Best Scoring Of A Musical Picture and the featured hit song "Since I Kissed My Baby Goodbye" by Cole Porter) among its many accolades.

A fusion of sexual heat, jealousy, fear and hatred - terrific stuff!, Hayworth is gorgeous and so is Ford. They are so good together and in this movie they are positively great. When great screen lovers are mentioned, I've often wondered why Ford and Hayworth aren't among them.
Not quite as good as, but a worthy bookend for Casablanca, THE best B picture ever made.

The Lady from Shanghai is worth checking out, especially for Welles, Hayworth, or film-noir buffs (fans of the Coen brothers might find this fascinating as well). It may just take a little while, repeat viewings (as was for Touch of Evil), for the underlying motives in the plot to sink in.
Once the trial, which is often hilarious, begins, the movie reaches the heights of greatness. It all climaxes with a visually stunning ending in the mirror room of a fun house and a fantastic performance by Hayworth.
Also there is gossip they are making a new version which is to be realsed in 2009

Like so manhy box sets this collection of Rita Hayworth films includes absolute classics like The Lady From Shanghai along side less inspired films like Pal Joey and the mix, of genres is a little uneasy to say the least. HAyworth however radiates in most of the film with her peculiar vulnerable sensuality.
