So begins this beautifully realised fable of love and sacrifice that not only stars, but was produced, directed and co-written (with Jack Rosenthal), by Barbara Streisand.
In Eastern Europe, 1904, Yentl (Striesand), a smart, spirited and independent young woman is forced to masquerade as a boy in order to pursue her love of knowledge... and discovers a love of an entirely different sort.
Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving (in an Academy Award nominated performance), co-star in this wonderfully delicate and lyrical film that is both a courageous and heartening achievement and a triumph.
Synopsis
Two time Academy Award winner Barbra Streisand stars in and makes her directorial debut with this musical about a young woman who must pass herself of as a man in order to study religious scripture.

It is the turn of last century, and good jewish girls are not meant to want to read and learn things... but Yentl is not the typical jewish girl. She wants to learn, she wants to seek knowledge and she doesn't mind dressing up as a boy and going away from her home to do so... she also doesn't seem to mind throwing in a few songs, either. A fairly decent movie, even if it does show its age now.
