Vietnam vet, Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works as a loner night-shift cabbie in New York. Roving the streets, he kills time by keeping a diary, popping pills and hanging out in porn theatres. A series of frustrations and his encounters with a 14-year-old prostitute (Jodie Foster) compel him to clean up the sordid milieu in which he operates. His answer; NO-HOLDS-BARRED VIOLENCE.

One of my favourite movies of all time. De Niro shines as the disturbed and homicidal Viet-Vet taxi driver - his comical, yet creepy, attempt at a relationship with Sheppard’s corny character and his desire to ‘rescue’ Foster’s tragic character render him bizarre, frightening, endearing and heroic. Sadly, not many other film characters are that layered. The 70’s New York setting is portrayed as both seedy (De Niro and Foster) and daggy (Sheppard), yet the film has a timeless endurance.

Travis drives the cab, fixates on the two females, muses on and on and eventually loses it at the violent finale. But man, there are some great individual scenes stuffed in this frame: Travis picks up a deranged man (played by Scorsese) who gives a chilling monologue about his plans to punish his unfaithful spouse; Travis converses with Wizard (A great turn from Peter Boyle) about life; We see Bickle's bizarre training regimen in his apartment as he prepares for the end; Travis humiliates himself horribly when he tries to go after Betsy. These individually great scenes all come together in climax that is absolutely stunning and brutal.

Taxi Driver is an interesting movie that shows what seems to be an earlier time, politic and societal mind-set. Robert Deniro acts very well and this is the main factor that makes this movie high quality. It’s also interesting to see Jodie Foster as such a young actor and it is clear to see how she developed into the skilled actress she is today. Overall this is a movie which many layers of depth.

A disenchanted taxi driver who spends his time brooding over the moral and urban decay that surrounds him and frequenting porn theatres. One day he encounters a child prostitute and decides it is his mission to save her and purge the city. Extraordinary, powerful, violent and incredibly influential film.
