Who is TakaPu, the gannet?
A gannet is a sea bird found mainly in the Pacific. It travels vast distances, feeds only on fish and breeds in colonies. The series’ main character TakaPu (the indigenous Maori name for the bird) is a fledgling gannet. In Helme Heine's stylised cartoon version of the real bird he wears a yellow bathing cap and blue flippers. TakaPu tells about the incredible adventures of his trips and his exciting encounters with the islanders of the Pacific. He is cheeky and precocious, like all young gannets, and of course, outrageously clumsy. His proverbial clumsiness combined with his fluffy plumage makes TakaPu a figure one wants to cuddle and love.
