The first major project written and directed by George Lucas. Sci-Fi from the expanding corners of a mastermind. A look so far into the future, it is still timeless. We get a view of a very technical, mechanized society in a subterranean world in the 25th century. Forget looking for a reason or purpose. If there are any questions to be answered, they change with each viewing of this classic. Top shelf Sci-Fi.

George Lucas' original was made in 1969, but not released until 1971, and was simply a further developed version of his university project film. It is very dystopian in nature, with drugs distributed to a shaven headed populace to repress sexual desire, and overseen by faceless police droids. The eventual bid for freedom by THX (Robert Duvall) from the dehumanising establishment & film climax is almost as stirring as the ending of "Cuckoo's Nest"...
The Director's Cut has the added advantage of CGI to enhance certain scenes.

George Lucas...
this was his university piece. It was a time limited assignment. Even then, Lucas refused to be bound by constraints if his mind had a bigger vision. The original was more than twice the assigned length. He got an 'A'
Now redone, see his first major work; his uni "major work".

While considered by many to be a classic THX 1138 is ultimately unsatisying. MAde by a film student called George Lucas it is a distillation of various concepts about dystopic totalitarian future - there is nothing very unfamiliar here, you've seen or read it all before. The movie is heavy going and betrays its film school origins all too often.

THX is a great piece of vision about our future society. Robert Duvall and even Sid Haig make appearances in a unique twist on the general thoughts of our future politically run societes. This time interpersonal relationships are the focus and George Lucas immediately shows his talent in creating a story come to life on the screen. Great film for Lucas fans and general Sci-Fi or movie fanatics
