Shakespeare In Love is a romantic comedy for the 1990's set in the 1590's, telling the witty, sexy story behind the creation of the greatest love story of them all - Romeo and Juliet. Young Will Shakespeare is the up and coming playwright of the time, but has been disastrously struck by the bane of the writer's life - writer's block. What Will needs is a muse - and she appears in the form of the beautiful (and betrothed) Lady Viola. The path of true love doesn't run smoothly for Will, however - Viola is engaged to be married to the insufferable Lord Wessex (COLIN FIRTH) at the command of Queen Elizabeth (JUDI DENCH). The joys and tragedy of his own life find their way onto the page in a moving, witty and spellbinding tale.

This is an excellent film, well worth watching. It's a romantic comedy in disguise as a rollicking period piece and it does a fairly good job at both. The leads are fine, and Dench is regal if brief. Ben Affleck (Ben Affleck!) puts in avery good supporting performance, as does Geoffrey Rush - in fact the gallery of supporting players is excellent. The script is funny and clever (especially if you know Shakespeare's work). Recommended.
It didn't quite reach its potential but it still contained the same bawdiness that littered shakespeares plays. It was extremely witty, it sometimes predictable, and had all the elements of a play.
Certain actors didn't quite live up to the part but the strength of the other actors makes up for it.
Typical Hollywood mess, a would be witty and sophisticated battle of the sexes costumer that is undone by a severe sense of its own importance and the simpering presence of Gwenyth Paltrow who somehow won an academy award. One of those movies that has quite a few things going for it but just can't seem to captialise on them.
