Wow, here's an emotional story that gets you involved and wears you out by the end. I wears you out not from action, but from watching two good ladies suffer heartbreaks one after the other. This is not my normal viewing fare but I am big fan of two things this movie has to offer: (1) Emma Thompson and (2) incredible visuals.
Few people were better in the 1990s at playing the sensible-sweet-wholesome and pretty and-always unfairly ignored woman than Thompson (see The Remains Of The Day and Howards End). Your heart aches for this woman whose characters always deserve better than what they receive.. Her facial expressions alone convey pain better than anyone I've ever seen on film. This is perhaps her best work and it was justice she was honored for it.
It was refreshing to see Alan Rickman actually place a nice guy and Kate Winslet was appealing, too - a far cry from spoiled brat role in the film that gave her stardom, Titantic.
One tip that I found useful in watching this movie. If you are not British, you might switch on the English subtitles to better understand the dialog and the phraseology of early 19th century England, in which this story takes place.
The only problem with using the subtitles is that it detracts from marveling at these visuals. This is one of the prettiest films I have ever seen, on both the inside and outside scenes. It's just gorgeous cinematography frame after frame with beautiful colors. Nice music score, too.
This kind of story is a bit too soap opera-like for my normal tastes but to watch Thompson and to ogle the colors, sets and scenery makes it all a rewarding experience. For women who like these kind of Jane Austen stories, this must really be a special film. For the rest of us, it's still very much worth seeing, and adding to one's DVD collection. It''s great film-making.
My least favourite Austen adaptation.
I would much more highly recommend the BBC's Sense & Sensibility series. This one is far too short and puts parts in the movie that aren't in the book and I don't think they add anything at all. They could've taken them out and put in much better bits from the book. For example, the stuff with Margaret, Edward and the atlas.
Far too short and misses some of the best parts of the book and BBC version. Great actors though and very watchable, but watch it before the BBC one or you will be disappointed like I was.
now how on earth did keira knightley manage to wrangle her self an oscar nomination when there are adaptations of jane austin novels such as this one Sense and Sensibility floating around? simply the most spectacular of spectacular movies is this, much of it due to the amazing director ang lee
This movie is hilarious. I have never laughed so much ever. It has great acting, affects, dialogue, and especially superb humour – everything you need in a great movie. The movie does have a few scenes that drag out but all in all it’s a must have for all comedy fans and is suitable for basically all ages. Buy it – You definitely won’t be disappointed:
this is such a good movie and a great adaption of the classic tale that we all know and love. if you are a fan of jane austen then i one hundred percent reccomend this movie to you. you will not regret buying it as it is a great purchase and a timeless classic that you and your family will love for years to come.
This is a great adaptation of Austen's novel. Kate Winslet is suitably headstrong, Hugh Grant is sutibly wet and the guy who plays Willobuy (sorry can't remember how to spell it) is suitbly dashing. The film moves at a faster tempo than thebook making for a more enjoyable experience and, of course, culminates in a happy ending.
This is a beautifully filmed movie with some really stunning scenery. Once you get used to a 40 year old plus Emma Thompson playing a 22 year old girl the movie is an excellent adaptation of the novel. Very entertaining.
This is actually quite a good adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. Emma Thomson is a wonderful actress, Kate Winslett is gorgeous as Marianne. It's only Hugh Grand who doesn't quite make the character of Edward Ferrars really believable. Still, he doesn't do too bad a job, and the rest of the cast more than makes up for it. The script follows fairly closely to the original story, which is also a refreshing change.
This is a fantastic movie. The acting is absolutely superb - Emma Thompson does a BRILLIANT job. The characters of the girl's mother is played brilliantly. Marianne's character is displayed wonderfuly especially when she is sick. This again is a really emotionally draining movie - a marathon. One of Austen's bests, it is made better by the performances of the actors and the skill of the directors.
it is really the acting that makes this movie what it is, and with a stellar cast of hugh grant, emma thompson and kate winslet to name a few, it is with no doubt that this is a highly sophisticate and enjoyable adaptation of the book by the same name by jane austin. you will not regret buying this movie, so get it now!
